Major construction project to provide real-world engineering experience for NSW students

Leeton Shire Council

Leeton Shire Council is collaborating with the NSW Department of Education’s STEM Industry School Partnerships Program (SISP) to create student learning resources from its Leeton Regional Aquatic Centre Redevelopment Project. The idea is to familiarise students from a young age right through to studies later in life for what careers in the engineering space may be available to them.

Council’s Manager Open Space and Recreation, Josh Clyne, said “The $5 million redevelopment of the (Leeton pool) is one of council's major construction projects and is being used as a case study to showcase how the various facets of engineering are applied in the real world.” The design consultants Facility Design Group and council's head building contractors Omnistruct for the pool project had embraced the opportunity to contribute and facilitate the learning opportunity for students.

Student learning resources will be created in the form of video interviews with local teams leading the project. Each interview is being developed by experienced engineering studies teacher, Ian Preston, who is also the SISP Riverina STEM project officer and SISP Virtual STEM Academy manager. "These materials will be an excellent resource for students studying civil structures, engineering studies and other STEM disciplines," said Mr Preston.

"Student and teacher resources will be uploaded to the iTeachSTEM website which is in development and due for launch later this year," he said.
